This could be so much fun with friends, basically the best place to go in winter…the only problem is that I am genetically incapable of skating…

Woody Allen read my mind….Midnight in Paris (spoiler alert) takes us back to 1920’s Paris!

You’ve gotta love Woody Allen. In a way, his comic timing is actually better than I’d ever given him credit.  Let me expand… a few days ago, I was having a discussion with a friend about which time period we might like to time-travel back to, just for a visit.  I said “1920’s Paris” without explanation. (I think our conversation got sidetracked as I do have my reasoning but don’t actually recall articulating it.)  Then, last night I decided to rent Midnight in Paris  knowing nothing about it’s plot, which was of course written and Directed by Allen himself.  Low and behold- the entire movie is based on the protagonist’s (played by Owen Wilson) ability to breeze in and out of 1920’s Paris-every night at the stroke of midnight.  A struggling writer, he’s able to hobnob with F. Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald, Hemingway, T.S. Eliot, Picasso & Dali, even having his unfinished novel critiqued by Gertrude Stein… all whilst Cole Porter tickles the ivories and Josephine Baker kicks up her heels dancing the original Charlston! Wow, this movie just about sums up all the reasons why I’d like to have traveled back to this amazing time & place!!  (Though the unforgettable flapper fashions also deserve an honorable mention, thank you Coco)!  I wonder who our modern time’s artistic equivalents might be?!?! Either way, Midnight in Paris is a cute little flick that deserves a viewing if you get the chance (& after a few stinkers, Woody is back on his game! YAY!)

Allen with some of the cast at Cannes where the movie was well received.

ps. my favorite cameo comes from Adrian Brody as Salvador Dali. He did an amazing job. Also keep an eye open for Carla Bruni-Sarkozy (yes, the first lady of France) to make an appearance as a tour guide, too funny.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.
